Bala Lake Railway

Amongst the high mountains of Snowdonia are two deep river valleys - the Dee and the Tryweryn. The River Dee emerges from Bala Lake where the Bala Lake Railway operates parallel to the east shore between Bala and Llanwchllyn.

Lahaina Ka'anapali & Pacific Railroad, Maui, Hawaii.

Although there have been promises of this railway re-opening at the end of 2015 and now 2016, looking at what I saw, I can't see it re-opening any time soon!

Situated in Maui between Lahaina and Ka'anapali this 6 mile railroad passes fields of cane and rises to cross the impressive Hahakea Trestle for a view of the ocean and the West Maul Mountains.

Fairbourne & Barmouth Steam Railway

The railway runs from Fairbourne village to the mouth of the Mawddach estuary connecting with the ferry to Barmouth. Started as a 2 foot gauge horse drawn tramway it was reduced to a 15 inch gauge in 1916 and later in 1984 to 12.25 inch gauge.

Bure Valley Railway

The Bure Valley Railway in Norfolk is a nine mile journey between Aylsham and Wroxham through Brampton, Buxton and Coltishall along the way.

South Tynedale Railway

Running from Alston's restored Victorian station through the South Tyne Valley to Lintley Halt this narrow gauge railway is a little gem. Both steam and diesel engines from the UK and abroad operate along this line.

Groudle Glen Railway

Originally built in 1896 as part of the Groudle Glen pleasure grounds and attractions, this beautiful two foot gauge railway ran until the early 1960's before it fell into disrepair and eventually scrapped during the 1970's.

Rescued from total extinction in 1982 by enthusiastic volunteers, we have today this short line once again operating to the Sea Lion Rocks Tea Rooms.

Ffestiniog Railway - Steam 150

Bank Holiday weekend, 3rd to 6th May 2013, saw the 150th anniversary of steam powered locomotives working on the Ffestiniog Railway. Here are just a few shots taken during this special event.

After a major overhaul, the return of Romanian No.764.425 - Resita 0-8-0, built 1954.

Here she can be seen departing Welshpool during the W&LLR Steam Gala of 2012.

Lynton & Barnstaple Railway

The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway opened in May 1898 and closed just after 37 years in 1935. This 19 mile line and its purposely chosen gauge of 1ft 11 1/2in (600mm) was constructed to follow the natural contours of the North Devon countryside. The one-mile section in use today was reopened in 2004 and operates from Woody Bay station to Killington Lane.
